Granite VNA Hosts Screening of "Defining Hope" at Red River Theatres in Concord

November is National Home Care and Hospice Month, and Granite VNA invites the public to a special screening of the award-winning film “Defining Hope,” a moving documentary that follows people with life-threatening illness as they make choices about how they want to live, how much medical technology they can accept, what they hope for and how that hope evolves when life is threatened. A discussion of the topics raised in the film will follow.

The screening will take place Tuesday, November 15, at 5:30 p.m., at Red River Theatres on Main Street, Concord, NH. Immediately following the film, Jennifer Brechtel, CHES, Granite VNA’s director of community health, will moderate a panel discussion with members of the agency’s hospice team, including nurse Lori Graf-Merrigan, RN, social worker Susan Varnum, LICSW, APHSW-C, and spiritual care counselor Rachelle Eaton, MDiv., PD. The panel will explore topics raised in the film and will share their experiences and insights. The panelists will also take questions from the audience.

With our country’s – and our state’s – aging population and incalculable challenges in healthcare and end-of-life care, “Defining Hope” is critical and relevant. Technology such as ventilators, dialysis machines, ICUs—technologies that can “fix” us and keep our bodies alive— have radically changed how people make medical decisions. End-of-life choices can be the most complex, but the film is optimistic and reminds us that we have choices in how we die.

Granite VNA has been serving the Greater Concord community since 1899, and the agency has provided hospice care since 1981. Prior to opening New Hampshire’s first Hospice House on Pleasant Street in 1994, Granite VNA provided hospice care in patients’ homes, in hospitals, and nursing homes – services which continue today.

Granite VNA invites the public to attend the screening of “Defining Hope” free of charge, but pre-registration is requested. To register, click here.
