A Hospice Nursing Story

We are featuring a series of brief nursing stories all week to celebrate the outstanding work of our nurses during National Nurses Week (May 6-12).

The following story is from one of our hospice nurses:

It was my rotation to work and there was a young woman with end stage cancer who was getting transferred to a Hospice House. She could no longer be cared for at home due to her symptoms. I recall that her family was there along with a social worker.

While she was being moved to the ambulance, I asked them to stop for a moment. I put the patient's small dog on her lap and her dog curled up next to her. It was immediately clear to me that would be something meaningful to her and I could relate because of the bond I had with my dogs.
