Volunteer Named UNH Age of Champions Excellence in Volunteerism Award Recipient

Granite VNA volunteer Joanne Casino of Concord was named the recipient of the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Age of Champions Excellence in Volunteerism Award for 2023. The award recognizes individuals who inspire others in the community by gaining and maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, while also serving as a role model who optimizes the experiences throughout their life. Casino, who has logged nearly 750 volunteer hours with Granite VNA since 2019, was honored in a virtual ceremony on Friday, April 21, 2023.

“Joanne is respected by other agency volunteers and Granite VNA team members alike,” said Jennifer Brechtel, CHES, Director of Community Health at Granite VNA. “She is an integral part of helping us fulfill our mission, whether facilitating programming to help people gain skills and confidence to live independently or providing support at Hospice House, her spirit, kindness and generosity are boundless and greatly appreciated.”

Brechtel, who nominated Casino for the UNH Age of Champions Excellence in Volunteerism Award, says Casino’s commitment, work ethic and her ‘can do’ attitude inspire all who encounter her. In addition to being a highly skilled volunteer facilitator for the agency’s nationally recognized, evidence-based community wellness programs, Casino is an ambassador for Granite VNA flu clinics throughout the region, volunteers at Hospice House, frequently assists with fundraising events, and supports the agency with various administrative tasks.

Casino received her bachelor’s degree in English from Long Island University and her master’s degree in Organizational Management and Leadership from Springfield College. After beginning her career in book publishing and advertising in New York City, Casino moved to New Hampshire where she worked in corporate training and directed marketing and communication efforts for a multi-state health insurance company. She is now retired and enjoys volunteering and spending time with her grandchildren.

Casino and her fellow 2023 awardees were recognized through a display at the 10th Annual Age of Champions Health and Wellness Fair hosted by the UNH Center on Aging and Community Living (CACL) on Saturday, April 22, in the UNH Field House Gymnasium. The annual event celebrates healthy and active aging.
