The Power of Hospice – Even When Time is Short

When most people hear the word hospice, they often envision weeks or months of support – time spent helping families focus on comfort, connection, and what matters most. But sometimes things change quickly. Even when hospice care is brief, it can still make a world of difference.
Bob Kerry and his daughter, Michelle Lambert, experienced this firsthand when Bob’s wife Helen took an unexpected turn in her chronic illness. They suddenly needed help, and Granite VNA hospice stepped in right away.
“We felt helpless,” Bob said. “Everyone who came to our house educated us on what to do and reassured us we were not alone. We were surrounded by highly competent people who took care of us, too. The Granite VNA team provided care and compassion effortlessly.”
Helen passed away just a couple of days after beginning hospice care, but those days brought comfort and relief that the family will never forget. Michelle remembers the moment the hospice team arrived: “It took a thousand-pound weight off my father’s shoulders.”
As the hospice team supported Helen, they also supported Bob and Michelle. Bob recalls a meaningful conversation with Israel, a spiritual care counselor, who simply sat with him and offered understanding and peace. “He was wonderful to talk to,” Bob shared. “It helped me tremendously.”
Sometimes hospice care is a long journey, and sometimes it is very brief. But in any case, the compassion, support, and understanding stay with families forever.
Bob and Michelle remain deeply grateful for the care they received during one of life’s hardest times – and for the people who made sure they did not have to go through it alone.
