Granite VNA Launches Initiative to Recruit Veteran Volunteers for Hospice Program

Military veterans who are receiving hospice care often have unique physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs shaped by their military service. Veteran-to-veteran companionship can offer these patients reassurance, dignity, and understanding at the end of life.

To recruit additional military veterans into its hospice volunteer ranks, Granite VNA has launched the “Eleven Veteran Volunteers by November 11” initiative. The goal of the initiative is simple: recruit eleven prospective veteran volunteers by Veterans Day, November 11, 2026.

“Many veterans have shared experiences and perspectives that are difficult for others to fully understand. Veterans can offer patients a unique sense of camaraderie, respect, and connection during an important stage of life,” said Granite VNA Chief Strategy Officer Julie Stone. “Just a few hours of volunteer service can have a lasting impact on a patient who is a veteran patient and their family.”

Granite VNA welcomes prospective veteran volunteers from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces and from every generation of service. Veteran volunteers may visit hospice patients in their homes, assisted living communities, nursing facilities, and at Granite VNA Hospice House, depending on their interests, availability, and training. Veteran volunteers may also participate in the agency’s community programming and have opportunities to provide guidance on the development of veteran-specific programs.

Granite VNA veteran volunteers also play a vital role in recognizing and honoring patients for their military service through the agency’s veteran recognition ceremonies in which patients are presented with a personalized certificate, a special lapel pin, and a small American flag. These simple ceremonies help ensure that veterans receive the appreciation and respect they have earned through their service.

The “Eleven Veteran Volunteers by November 11” initiative reflects Granite VNA’s ongoing commitment to providing compassionate, individualized care for the many veterans and military families served throughout the communities of central New Hampshire.

“Veteran-to-veteran companionship is one of the most meaningful services we can offer our patients who have served in the military,” said Granite VNA Volunteer Coordinator Lynne Sabean. “We are calling on local veterans to join our hospice volunteer team and help provide compassionate support to fellow veterans in our care.”

Hospice volunteer opportunities are available throughout the Greater Concord area and Lakes Region. No prior experience is necessary, and training is provided.
